Meet the founder
Karlene first started nursing at a rural nursing home in Millbrook Ontario. She worked as a Charge Nurse gaining the necessary skills in communication, patience and client advocacy to name a few. Wanting to do more, having laid the roots and foundation of her own nursing values and personal experiences. Karlene decided she wanted and needed to do more. In 2007 Karlene obtained her Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education through Hospice Ontario, and changed her focus from Home Care Nursing to Palliative Care.
Karlene took a position at Peterborough Regional Health Care Center in 2015. Here she was able to display her true beneficence providing the best palliative – end of life care she could. While at PRHC, Karlene continued to diversify her skill set by volunteering during staffing shortages in the Emergency Department, Maternity, Medical Out Patient, and Mental Health Addictions Services. To further better herself and truly grasp the disease processes that were claiming the life of her patients, Karlene wanted to change her focus from palliative to prevention. In 2016 she enrolled and graduated from the Peri Operating room certificate program from Sir SandFord Fleming and felt confident it was time to move forward with her quest to do better.
In 2017 with her new found education and skills, Karlene joined the tight knitted operating room “guardian angels” team at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Working autonomously and in collaboration with many allied health professionals, she continues to learn how to safeguard the welfare and protection of each individual patient. With each case needing unique care and at their most defenceless state, Karlene with her emotional grit, unfaltering resolve continues to be a leader for patient advocacy.
In November 2023, Karlene joined Team Broken Earth Barrie Surgical Mission Team. Karlene spent a week, volunteering her time and skills to provide life changing surgeries to underprivileged rural Guatemalans.
With her calm supportive presence she has brought ease to families struggling to understand the next steps. Karlene believes that patients and family members faced with a life limiting disease deserve a profound amount of support and wellbeing. She practices nursing with the highest quality of care and has a unique ability to bring solace and peace during unforeseeable times.
Dying may take hours or days. No one can predict the time of death, even if the person is exhibiting typical end-of-life signs and symptoms.
This can sometimes cause fatigue and confusion; and although one might be prepared for the dying process, one might not be prepared for the actual death moment. Karlene can be that guiding light for those who are experiencing a diagnosis of end of life.
She can take the time to educate one of the most unknown times of life and try to help control the stress of the uncertainties.
Over the last five years Karlene has been providing the highest quality private palliative – end of life care consulting. In 2017 Karlene was contracted by the Department of National Defence to review, update, instruct as well as create examination questions for the Canadian Armed Forces Physician Assistant Program Palliative Care module. This content was used right up to the last graduating class in 2022.
